Bearing full Chester hallmarks for 1957 this fabulous vintage Scottish sterling silver kilt pin is crafted as a medieval Scottish broadsword or claymore. Chester hallmarks are always a treat, the assay office closed in 1962 resulting in these historic hallmarks becoming sought after and collectible.

A quality piece crafted in heavy gauge silver with lovely attention to detail, the sword is decorated with Celtic knot work along the blade, signifying a bond that cannot be broken. The hilt is decorated in a triquetra (trinity knot) motif representing the 'past, present & future' and to finish it has an elegant plumed finial at the top of the handle.

Along with the hallmarks this kilt pin is also stamped 'Scotland' telling us it was made in Scotland and sent to Chester for assay. It features a heavy duty pin fastener with a roll over safety clasp that will accommodate thick fabrics and tartans with ease.

The tradition of wearing a pin to weigh down the front of a kilt is said to originate with Queen Victoria. On a windy day, in Scotland, she is said to have given a soldier her own brooch to stop the front of his kilt flapping, thus preserving his modesty!

Good for him or her this striking piece of traditional Scottish dress jewellery would make a perfect statement brooch worn on the lapel, chunky sweater or hat!
