An incredible vintage 1965 Scottish silver figural axe/halberd brooch by renowned silversmith Robert Allison, what a statement piece!
Crafted in a distinctive Celtic design the brooch is fashioned as a pole axe, an old Scottish battle weapon which is basically an axe with a spike at the top attached to a long pole. It is fully hallmarked for Edinburgh on the back and is in beautiful condition.
At 3" long and thick gauge silver the brooch is substantial enough for wear on heavy fabrics and could be worn as a full sized kilt pin if desired. The tradition of wearing a pin to weigh down the front of a kilt goes back to Queen Victoria's reign. On a windy day, in Scotland, she is said to have given a soldier her own brooch to stop the front of his kilt flapping, thus preserving his modesty!
A sturdy pin back with a roll over safety clasp completes this beautiful example of traditional Scottish silver, a lovely accent accessory good for the gents or the ladies and perfect for a Scottish themed wedding or adding a little rebellious pizazz to any outfit!
