Optional Silver Chain

Made by silversmith William Oliver and bearing crisp, beautifully preserved hallmarks for 1905, this delightfully feminine Edwardian sovereign case is in remarkable condition, appearing to have seen very little use. The interior remains exceptionally clean and pristine.

Originally designed to carry sovereigns – British gold coins with a nominal value of one pound (£1) – these charming antique cases have found a wonderful second life as distinctive locket-style pendants, perfect for keeping precious little mementos close.

Crafted in a beautiful spherical form, the case is finely engraved on both sides, each featuring a different yet complementary design. One side centres around a vacant shield-shaped cartouche, originally intended to accommodate an engraved monogram. The shield is framed by beautifully flowing acanthus leaves and crowned with a delicate wild rose spray. The reverse is equally ornate, echoing the elegant foliage and scrolling decoration.

The case opens flawlessly by depressing the discreet button at the top, allowing the hinged door to spring open and reveal an immaculate interior. Inside is the original, beautifully preserved machine-engraved, spring-loaded plate designed to hold the sovereigns securely. The case closes firmly with a reassuring click.

The gold sovereign shown inside is purely for display and is not included in the sale.

This beautiful piece can be purchased with or without the antique solid silver guard chain shown in our photographs. The chain measures 31 inches (75cm) and features tightly woven double curb links, terminating in a classic swivel clip.

A lovely example of Edwardian silver craftsmanship, combining practical ingenuity with wonderfully decorative engraving. Equally beautiful worn as a pendant or treasured as a little piece of jewellery history, it offers a particularly elegant way to keep a cherished keepsake close.
