A beautiful quality antique Victorian 14ct double-graded rolled gold double Albert watch chain with a remarkably versatile configuration.
It features a central T-bar with a chain drop terminating in an antique bolt-ring clasp with a lever opener, allowing different fob pendants to be attached and changed with ease. The principal chain is exceptionally long, creating an impressive drape when worn traditionally as a watch chain, while its generous length also allows it to be worn as a necklace or even wrapped around the wrist as an incredible bracelet.
The chain terminates in a traditional dog-clip at one end for attaching a pocket watch, while the other end features a matching bolt ring for attaching another watch-chain charm — perhaps a locket, personal seal or other cherished pendant.
The piece has a luxurious, rich warm 14ct gold colour and is marked JF & Sons 1/10 on the dog clip. This indicates a gold content of 10% by weight, double the 5% (1/20) gold content associated with the recognised gold-filled standard. The substantial thickness of the gold layer is apparent on close examination of the ends of the T-bar, where the edge of the bonded gold layer can clearly be seen around the silver-coloured metal core.
Victorian rolled gold represented a premium alternative to solid gold. Rather than a thin surface plating, a substantial layer of gold was permanently bonded to a base-metal core under pressure, producing jewellery with remarkable durability, warmth and longevity. This superior method of manufacture has allowed this Albert chain to retain its exceptional finish and beautiful colour for well over a century, giving it the impressive appearance and feel of a solid gold piece.
