A grand antique Victorian cuff bangle fashioned in sterling silver with a large belt and buckle along the front chased and engraved in an exquisite Aesthetic floral pattern. The belt's infinite loop and secure buckle was a popular symbol of eternal love and commitment in the Victorian era. As an extra special treat she still resides in her original drum shaped box from London watchmaker and jewellers Wales & McCulloch. A pièce de résistance addition to any antique jewellery collection!
Fully hallmarked for the year 1884 the bangle is crafted on the oval in heavy gauge silver. It has rolled edges along the top and bottom, a hinge on one side, a secure box clasp on the other along with a safety chain. The front of the bangle is beautifully decorated in hand-engraved sprays of roses and not to be outshone the back of the bracelet is engraved in the highly ornate monogram of the original owner. As a jewellery motif roses represent eternal love, Victorian jewellery is steeped in romance!
The fitted bracelet case is made of wood covered in maroon leather with gold tooling. It has brass hinges and latch and the interior is lined in seafoam pastel green silk and royal purple velvet. It is printed inside the lid "Wales & McCulloch, Goldsmiths & Watchmakers, 56 Cheapside & 22 Ludgate, London".
The box itself is a great find! Cheapside became famous in 1912 after a large hoard of late 16th, early 17th century Jacobean and Elizabethan jewels were unearthed by workmen excavating the cellar at 30-32 Cheapside. Now residing in London museums The Cheapside Hoard is thought to have been a Jacobean goldsmiths working stock buried in the cellar during the English Civil War. Imagine that the person buying this special bangle was just a few doors away from where this priceless hoard still lay waiting to be discovered!
Steeped in romantic sentiment this glorious English Victorian silver bangle in its historic fitted case is the perfect antique gift, whether for a loved one or a treat for yourself!
