A lovely quality vintage Whitby jet cabochon ring crafted in gleaming sterling silver. Whitby Jet is a fossilized mineral gemstone millions of years old that is found in and around Whitby, a seaside hamlet in England.
The plump egg shaped cabochon of jet is set into a sinuous Art Nouveau/Arts & Crafts style sterling silver mount that lends itself beautifully to the organic nature the jet. A sturdy D-shaped band completes this elegant statement ring.
If you have never enjoyed genuine Whitby jet jewellery before it is a wonderful organic gemstone used since ancient times (Jet jewellery that dates to Roman times has been unearthed in Britain). Polished to a high shine it is a glossy intense deep black, it is very lightweight, warm to the touch and if you tap it against your teeth it makes a dull tap.
