A striking and rather large vintage Scottish sterling silver bar brooch decorated in celtic knotwork and a thistle set with a paste amethyst stone. The brooch is stamped with full Glasgow hallmarks for 1963 which was the final year of operation for the Glasgow assay office. It closed its doors in 1964 resulting in these historical hallmarks becoming quite desirable.
This is a fairly long and masculine piece that could be worn as a distinctive kilt pin too. Crafted in solidly cast fairly thick silver it has a sturdy pin back that will accommodate heavier fabrics with ease.
An unusual example of a traditional Scottish dress brooch with plenty of age to it. Good for the gents or the ladies and highly collectible too!
MATERIALS: sterling silver.
GEMSTONES: paste (glass) amethyst
HALLMARKS: 'tree' for Glasgow, 'thistle' for Scotland, 'lion passant' for sterling and date letter 'R' in a quatrefoil punch for 1963. Also stamped with an obscured makers mark in an oval punch.
MEASUREMENTS: 3" (7.5cm) long, 1" (2.7cm) wide at the centre
WEIGHT: 8.1 grams.
ERA: Mid Century, dated 1963.
CONDITION: in very good condition with light surface wear as expected in a vintage piece. There are some tiny pit marks in the surface of the silver which is natural, it happens during the casting process when tiny bubbles of gas escape, and it does show you have an individually made piece. The pin back in perfect working order fastening securely.
