Circa 1820, this exquisite antique English Vauxhall glass flower pendant looks strikingly modern and remains as desirable and wearable today as it was when first created 200 years ago.
The pendant is a fairly large size and constructed from beautifully faceted marquise-shaped tiles of deep black Vauxhall glass arranged in an elegant geometric flower motif. The tiered design was specifically intended to catch candlelight, creating a mesmerising sparkle in the soft glow of Georgian evening illumination.
Each glass panel is stacked onto a domed metal backing plate finished in thick japanning, a high-gloss black lacquer technique widely used in the late Georgian and early Victorian period. This gleaming black finish perfectly complemented the fashionable jet, onyx and black glass jewellery worn during the era.
For ease of wear today we have added a new sterling silver mini-Belcher chain, allowing this historic jewel to be worn immediately.
Floral designs set on japanned metal are characteristic of Vauxhall glass jewellery, produced at the Vauxhall glassworks located on the Albert Embankment in Lambeth, London. Much of this jewellery was sold at the celebrated Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, one of Georgian London’s most fashionable entertainment venues.
Operating between 1729 and 1859, the gardens were a dazzling centre of nightlife where visitors enjoyed concerts, fireworks, promenading, and spectacular balloon ascents by candlelight. It was the place to see and be seen, and jewellery such as this would have glittered beautifully under the lantern-lit avenues.
Steeped in Georgian history, this elegant Regency-era jewel is a wonderful piece for connoisseurs and collectors of early antique jewellery. Due to the fragile nature of glass, authentic Vauxhall glass pieces are increasingly scarce survivors, making this pendant both wearable and highly collectible.
