An irresistibly romantic Regency portrait miniature of a handsome young gentleman, c.1805–1820.
Dating solidly to the Georgian Regency era, there is something charmingly compelling about this British portrait miniature. His short, softly curled hair with natural sideburns reflects the height of fashion, while his high, wrapped cravat rising to the chin and dark coat with standing collar speak to the refined tailoring of the early 19th century. One cannot help but wonder who this intimate likeness was painted for—perhaps a lover, or someone who kept him close to the heart.
Executed in watercolour, the painting demonstrates a confident and capable hand. The sitter is portrayed against a soft sky wash, with finely controlled stipple shading and delicate tonal modelling defining the flesh tones. The crisp white folds and shadows of the cravat are carefully observed, and a subtle suggestion of stubble lends a naturalistic quality typical of the period.
The miniature is housed under glass within a simple gold-cased pendant frame of pegged construction, with its original dark blue velvet backing to the reverse. A suspension ring allows it to be worn as intended.
Portrait miniatures such as this were deeply personal objects—tokens of affection and remembrance long before the advent of photography—today they offer a direct and human connection to the past.

CONDITION:
Very good antique condition. The paint surface is clean, under magnification the fine stippling within the cravat is part of the artist’s technique rather than discolouration. Any white marks are reflections in the glass. The pendant frame shows minimal wear to the gold casing. The velvet-backed reverse remains intact and is securely pegged in place. Note the chain is not included.
