An unusual and captivating antique Victorian sterling silver bracelet dating to circa 1880, beautifully set with nine natural operculums, often known as Shiva's Eye, Pacific Cat's Eye or Mermaid's Money.
These fascinating organic treasures are not gemstones in the traditional sense, but the protective 'trapdoors' of Turban sea snails. The name operculum derives from the Latin for 'little lid', referring to the natural door that seals the shell when the creature retreats inside.
Each creamy and honey-toned operculum displays its own distinctive pattern of concentric rings and delicate, radiating vein-like markings. No two are identical, giving the bracelet a wonderfully organic and individual character.
Of excellent quality and entirely hand-crafted, each operculum is individually mounted in a substantial closed-back silver setting. The bracelet fastens with a concealed box clasp, creating an elegant, continuous circle around the wrist when worn. The original safety chain provides additional security while adding a decorative finishing touch.
As is often the case with Victorian bracelets of this period, this example is best suited to a petite wrist, with a wearable length of 16.5cm (6½ inches).
