A delightful miniature Georgian 18ct gold-cased seal fob dating to circa 1780–1820, steeped in romance and the quiet sentimentality of a bygone age. Set into the base is a glowing honey-gold natural citrine engraved with a charming scene of two lovebirds drinking from a neoclassical urn or fountain, a graceful motif that beautifully echoes the elegant domed form of the seal itself.
One cannot help but wonder whether this tiny seal once closed treasured love letters with molten wax, carrying whispered promises across the centuries. Functional as well as beautiful, it can still be used today to create crisp wax impressions.
Crafted in high-quality gold casing, a durable bonded gold technique favoured during the late Georgian period, the fob has retained its wonderfully rich buttery-yellow colour, closely resembling solid high-carat gold.
With its delicate proportions measuring just 2cm (7/8 inch) high, this is an exceptionally feminine piece that would originally have been worn from a bracelet, ribbon or necklace and looks equally enchanting today suspended from a fine gold chain.
