___A magnificent and substantial antique Victorian sterling silver statement brooch showcasing a very large specimen of Scottish agate in rich carnelian shades of orange and red, displaying dramatic natural banding and fascinating inclusions deep within the stone.
Beautifully handcrafted, the agate has a gently pillowed profile and is set within an elegant sterling silver bezel. The brooch is fitted with a substantial pin back featuring an extra-long curved pin stem and decorative safety chain, allowing it to comfortably accommodate gathered fabrics and heavier garments.
Brooches of this impressive size were both decorative and practical, often worn to secure tartan, shawls, cloaks and wraps. Large Scottish agate brooches remain closely associated with traditional Scottish dress and make striking statement pieces when worn on the shoulder or breast.
