Circa 1900 and hailing from Budapest (the capital of Hungary) this striking antique Austro-Hungarian ring is crafted in substantial 800 silver and showcases a beautifully preserved half-sphere cabochon of natural coral in a warm peach-orange hue.
The organic gemstone has a closed back and sits dramatically atop a very tall, openwork crown gallery — an architectural setting that gives the ring remarkable height and presence on the hand. The shoulders are exquisitely embellished with sculpted putti (cherub) figures, arms raised as though offering the coral skywards. This romantic, symbolic detailing reflects the ornate renaissance artistry associated with late 19th to early 20th century Austro-Hungarian jewellery.
The ring is stamped inside the band with a 'dog head' inside a coffin shape along with '3' for 800 silver and 'P' for Pest (Budapest). This is a small goods hallmark used in the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1867 to 1922. There is also another indistinct stamp, likely the maker's mark. The Empire was dissolved in 1918 resulting in silver bearing these historic hallmarks becoming highly desirable.
