Fab geometric styling feature in this antique sterling silver, onyx and sparkling marcasite monogram brooch that hails from the Art Deco era.
Possibly German in origin it's a quality piece and heavy with the marcasite meticulously hand set. The brooch is constructed in two pieces with the central onyx panel bearing the initials "LME" riveted in.
This personalised jewellery design was height of fashion during the 1920's & 30's. Brooches were put together for the individual customer, the required initials would be set in a removable central panel that was then inserted into the brooch frame. Mass production of the components meant jewellers could assemble a brooch within minutes for a waiting customer but the quality of this one suggests it is an early one that would have been custom made and took time to produce. Perhaps ordered from an upscale department store catalogue.
We can't help wonder who "LME" was and how stylish she might have been, fabulous big bold piece and iconic of the high Deco era!
SPECIFICS:
Size 2-1/4" across (5.5cm), 1-1/2" high (4cm) and weighs a solid 22.7 grams. Hallmarked "Sterling" in two places.
Condition is very, very good, the pin back works perfectly and fastens securely. There are a few of the tiny marcasite missing which is barely noticeable except in the close-up photos.
