An exceptional antique Georgian 18ct gold citrine intaglio seal depicting Mars, the Roman god of war and protector of the Roman people. A superb example of a master gemstone engraver's work Mars is shown in profile wearing a majestic plumed helmet and he has curled hair and beard. The level of detailing is truly stunning and there appears to be a tiny signature or inscription on the bottom of the intaglio which we cant read.
The handle of the fob acid tests as solid 18ct gold, the base that holds the intaglio appears to be gold-cased silver. Gold-casing is an old technique sometimes seen in antique jewellery. A fairly substantial layer of solid gold was mechanically bonded to a strong base metal. The process reinforced the gold resulting in a durable piece that would withstand heavy use.
Steeped in history this Georgian intaglio fob will look exquisite paired with a gold chain to match his character and can still be used to seal letters with wax.

CONDITION: Overall in good condition. The solid gold handle is slightly dented where it has been held and there is a narrow line of wear to the gold casing around the base that shows the silver underneath. The citrine intaglio is free of chips and cracks and turns out a well defined impression
