Circa 1800, this beautiful Georgian gentleman’s cravat pin is a delicate survivor, no larger than a thumbnail and entirely hand-crafted in time worn 9ct yellow gold. At its centre sits a rectangular, glass-fronted locket compartment, enclosing a weave of dark blonde hair, intimate and deeply personal.
Encircling the compartment is a finely executed halo of tiny seed pearls, each secured in minute nipped settings. Their subtle, pale blue lustre lends a gentle glow to the piece and hints at its purpose as a mourning jewel, rather than a romantic token. In Georgian symbolism, pearls were often associated with tears, offering a poignant tribute to loss and remembrance.
The reverse retains its original Georgian fittings, including a T-hinge and an unusual curling C-clasp. Adding both practicality and charm, a gold safety chain with pin fitting remains in place—an elegant safeguard for such a small and meaningful treasure.
A rare survivor this pin has carried its tender sentiment for over two centuries. Once worn on a Georgian gent's neckcloth, it works beautifully today pinned to a lapel, tie, or collar—subtle, refined, and rich in history.
