Antique Sterling Silver Albert Watch Chain, 1918, Football Association Fob, 47.4g

Antique Sterling Silver Albert Watch Chain, 1918, Football Association Fob, 47.4g

A handsome and substantial antique sterling silver Albert watch chain dating to 1918, complete with its original T-bar and dog clip and accompanied by an attractive enamelled football fob.

Crafted from solid sterling silver curb links that graduate in size, this quality chain is stamped with the British lion passant mark for sterling silver on every curb link, a feature always sought after by collectors and a reassuring indication of quality manufacture. The chain retains its original fittings, with matching Birmingham hallmarks to the T-bar, dog clip and connecting rings, creating a wonderfully cohesive and authentic piece.

Adding both colour and character is the enamelled fob, hallmarked separately and dating to a later period. The fob displays the crest of the Staffordshire Schools Football Association, providing an appealing glimpse into the rich history of English school football and lending the chain a distinctive sporting connection. The reverse is engraved "J.S. Dowen 1929". Research suggests this may refer to schoolboy footballer Jack Dowen, who later played professionally for Wolverhampton Wanderers during the 1930s. While we have not verified the connection, the possibility adds an intriguing layer of sporting history and collector appeal to this handsome piece.

Originally intended for wear with a gentleman's pocket watch, Albert chains remain highly collectible today, prized for their craftsmanship, quality and enduring style. Whether added to a collection of antique silver, worn as a traditional watch chain, or appreciated as a piece of sporting history, this is a fine example of an increasingly sought-after classic.
