Circa 1900, a striking antique sterling silver pendant combining a cross and anchor in a bold Gothic design, beautifully sculpted with distinctive detailing on both sides.
The cross features an inset X-shaped detail where the arms meet, while the elegantly sculpted anchor arms terminate in distinctive pointed, arrowhead-shaped flukes. At the centre of the anchor, a deeply recessed diamond motif adds further character and definition.
Crafted in solid sterling silver using a two-part construction, the pendant has lovely depth and a rounded profile, with beautifully finished contours that give it a satisfying sense of substance.
The combination of cross and anchor has long held Christian significance, symbolising faith, hope and steadfastness, and was particularly meaningful in a maritime context. Both motifs were popular in Victorian and Edwardian jewellery, where religious sentiment and personal symbolism often found expression in beautifully crafted adornments. Still enduringly appealing today, they give this piece a decorative presence with historical resonance.
The pendant is fitted with a substantial sterling silver jump ring, added to provide a secure suspension, and it is accompanied by a vintage sterling silver curb chain. The chain has a pleasing weight and classic simplicity that complements the pendant without detracting from its striking design. At approximately 16-1/4 inches (41.2cm) long, it sits neatly at the neckline, displaying the tall pendant to excellent advantage.
An unusual and characterful antique silver pendant, combining bold Gothic styling with enduring maritime and religious symbolism. A distinctive addition to an antique jewellery collection, and a meaningful piece to wear and treasure.
