At first glance, you would be forgiven for believing this exquisite Victorian Albertina was crafted in solid gold, such is its warm, rosy glow and beautifully preserved finish. Only during professional testing did we discover it was, in fact, a superb quality example of Victorian rolled gold at its very best.
Dating to around 1880–1890, this elegant ladies' watch chain is a wonderful example of Victorian craftsmanship. The Albertina was the feminine counterpart to the gentleman's Albert watch chain, designed to secure a pocket watch to a bodice or jacket while adding a touch of fashionable refinement. Today, these versatile pieces are highly sought after as distinctive antique bracelets, bringing Victorian charm effortlessly into modern jewellery collections.
Beautifully crafted in elegant Victorian rose coloured rolled gold, the Albertina features two rows of softly draped curb links finished with decorative clover-shaped finials. The gold has the gentle, warm rosy hue so characteristic of antique rose gold—far softer and more understated than the pinker tones often seen in modern rose gold. A charming geometric slider, engraved with what appears to be a little house or church, allows the chain to be adjusted for the perfect fit and display. Suspended beneath is an enchanting little seal fob, intricately engraved with the name "Agnes V", offering a wonderfully personal glimpse into its Victorian past.
The chain is completed with its original T-bar and quality swivel dog clip, stamped "D.B. & Co.", making it equally beautiful worn as an antique bracelet or displayed as part of a watch chain collection.
Victorian rolled gold (also known as gold-filled) represented the finest quality alternative to solid gold.
