A rare and finely preserved Imperial Russian silver belt buckle, assayed in 1872, and executed in niello with crisp, deeply engraved ornament. Pieces with a clearly struck, legible date are increasingly scarce and this superb example offers a firm point of reference within the mid-19th century Russian silver tradition.
The form—two domed circular plates joined by a central clasp—is characteristic of Caucasian belt fittings, likely associated with workshops active in the Tiflis region. The surfaces are richly worked with scrolling foliate engraving, filled with dark niello to create a strong graphic contrast typical of the finest regional production.
At the centre, the clasp is adorned with a flowing serpent motif, its elongated S-shaped form rendered in niello. This stylised zoomorphic design, characteristic of Caucasian metalwork, is both decorative and symbolic, traditionally associated with protection. Positioned at the focal point of the buckle, serpentine motifs are often incorporated into weapon mounts, belt fittings and elements of armour, where they serve as subtle guardianship devices.
The reverse retains multiple Imperial Russian marks, including the 84 zolotnik silver standard (.875) which was the standard Russian silver grade during the Imperial period. Also stamped in a rectangular assay cartouche reading Т.И. over 1872, identifying the assay master and confirming the date. An additional shield-form assay mark and a mark reading ↄx further supports a regional origin. Together, these marks provide a high level of confidence in both period and attribution.
Steeped in history, this is a compelling example of 19th century Russian silver—where practical form meets rich ethnographic design. It will sit beautifully within a collection of rare Imperial silver, yet remains equally striking as a distinctive and wearable Victorian piece.
