A wonderful and fairly rare antique Victorian mourning bracelet made out of bog oak. Chubby round links of turned Irish bog oak are strung together with a large domed & pierced shamrock plaque in the front flanked at each side by two smaller shamrock plaques.
The remaining round plaques follow the beautifully detailed shamrock design with central concentric circles. There are eight plaques in total and although it stretches this is a bracelet probably best suited to a smaller wrist otherwise you will see the elastic thread.
Bog Oak is a very attractive material that was used during the 19th century to create Irish-themed jewellery, harps and clovers/shamrocks being the most popular motifs. Being black in colour with a matte appearance it was typically worn during periods of mourning but this beautiful Victorian bracelet can be worn today as a statement piece which, is bound to invite conversation!
