A beautifully preserved Victorian 9ct gold and black enamel mourning band, dating to 1901 and bearing desirable Chester hallmarks. A quality piece crafted in warm heavy gauge gold the design alternates between panels of finely braided hairwork and crisp black enamel sections spelling out the poignant inscription “In Memory Of”. To the front, a shield-shaped cartouche is engraved with the monogram “RGMP”, adding a personal and emotive focal point.
Mourning bands retaining both a complete enamel inscription and intact hairwork panels are becoming increasingly difficult to source in this condition. Here, the hairwork remains secure and well defined beneath its original protective finish, which has helped preserve the hair over time. The enamel is similarly well preserved, with clear, legible lettering throughout.
The ring bears clear and well struck Chester assay marks for 1901. Pieces from the Chester assay office are particularly sought after, as the office closed in 1962, making surviving examples increasingly collectible.
A gentle and enduring token of remembrance, this ring captures both the artistry of the Victorian jeweller and the personal story it was made to honour.
